Founded in 1986, First Community Housing (FCH) is a non-profit, public benefit Housing Development Corporation located in San Jose, California. FCH develops, constructs, and manages multi-family, affordable housing for those who earn less than the area's median income. Having developed over 1,000 households, with 600 more currently in development, FCH focuses on the needs of its residents, as well as the environment. FCH is a member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Green Affordable Housing Coalition, and is an ENERGY STAR partner. A recent FCH development was also the first multi-family housing development in California to earn the LEED for Homes Gold certification, a voluntary rating system that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes.

Background

First Community Housing engages in network activities that are typical for nearly any business, including email communications, web browsing, downloading files from the Internet, and FTP transmissions. With more than 40 end users and two Microsoft Exchange servers located inside the company’s firewall, FCH realized that its normal business operations put it at risk for spam, viruses, spyware, and other Internet threats. However, the company also understood that the “risky” behaviors were a necessary part of their everyday business operations, so they would have to figure out how to protect against the threats, while still engaging in the activities.

To resolve the problem without disrupting their operations, FCH enlisted the help of their long-time technology solutions provider, Networking Architechs.
