Background

OFW&F’s network environment is comprised of 45 Windows-based end user systems, as well as a Web Server and Windows-based servers running Windows Small Business Server, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft SQL Server, as well as using enterprise security systems for the servers and hosts in the domain. The firm also provides secured wireless Internet access to clients using a DMZ within their network. During tax season, OFW&F has as many as 45 simultaneous users working up to 80-hour workweeks. With employees in the office for so many hours, end user systems were routinely utilized for a mix of business and personal use.

With no formal restrictions on Internet access, employees were spending time visiting shopping, social networking, and gaming sites; streaming multimedia to their workstations; and using P2P applications such as Gnutella, GTalk, and BitTorrent. Users also utilized instant messaging to keep in touch with friends and family. This resulted in a significant drag on employee productivity and unnecessary exposure to security threats.
